Chainsaw Man Chapter 101 Insights: The War Devil Urges Asa to Kill Yuko!
Tatsuki Fujimoto’s fourth chapter of Chainsaw Man Part Two, Chapter 101, “Afterschool Devil Hunters,” shows that he is still going strong. The chapter starts the day after Yuko gave Asa her shoes because her old ones were covered in raw meat by bullies.
Even though Yuko is kind, Asa is still not sure about this new friendship. This is shown by the fact that she won’t look Yuko in the eye and gave back the shoes, saying they were too small.
Chainsaw Man chapter 101 insights
- Yuko’s motivation for becoming a Devil hunter is to make money and get revenge for her parents who were killed by a Devil, just like Asa’s parents.
- Asa and Yuko’s shared experience of losing their parents to Devils brings them closer together.
- The War Devil urges Asa to kill Yuko, testing his loyalty and causing a fight between him and the Devil.
- Asa and the War Devil reach an agreement and start calling each other by their names, but danger lurks as they encounter the Bat Devil who is killing many people.
- The world of Chainsaw Man is shown to be a horrible place where Devils kill many people, and Asa’s fate is uncertain as Yoru delivers bad news to her.
Yuko’s Motivation for Devil Hunting and Asa’s Connection with Yuko
Yuko doesn’t give up, though, and suggests that the two of them go Devil hunting after school, which, again, I don’t know why the school lets them do. Later that day, when they are eating together on a bench, Yuko brings up the fact that Yoshida wasn’t at school. She wants to know if he is serious about joining the Devil hunting club.
She doesn’t know that Yoshida is already a Devil hunter, which means he probably didn’t show up because he had to work.
Or, he might be following them in secret to keep a closer eye on Asa, who he probably suspects after seeing the War Devil take over her body in Chapter 99.
Asa asks Yuko why she joined the club when she asks where Yoshida is. Yuko says she wants to become a Devil hunter to make money and get revenge for her parents, who were killed by a Devil, just like Asa. Since Yuko looks a lot like Kusakabe, the fact that her parents were killed by a Devil could support the idea that she is his daughter.
In any case, the fact that both of their parents were killed by Devils brings Asa and Yuko closer together. Yuko says that they should become Devil Hunters and work together because they are “kind of like manga main characters.”
Well, Yuko, you kind of have to live a long time to be the main character in a manga, and since you’re in a story written by Tatsuki Fujimoto, I’m not sure how long you’ll actually live.
The War Devil Urges Asa to Kill Yuko, Testing His Loyalty
This worried me even more when Yuko went to the bathroom and the War Devil showed up again in front of Asa and told him to kill Yuko. As a side note, I really liked how Fujimoto had Asa find out the War Devil was there. First, there’s a panel of her watching Yuko leave with a rare smile on her face. Then there are a few small panels of her eating, and the last panel of the page shows Asa looking at her and taking the smile away.
On the next page, we see the War Devil sitting next to Asa and boldly saying that they should kill Yuko. The War Devil tells Asa that if he feels bad about killing someone, the body of that person will become a stronger weapon. This is scary because the War Devil was already pretty strong when it used the teacher’s body in Chapter 98. Imagine how strong it could be if it used Yuko, who is actually Asa’s friend.
It uses the “power of friendship” trope in a very sad way. Asa is disgusted by the idea of killing Yuko, which causes a fight between her and the War Devil, which makes many people and a cat look at them. Asa and the War Devil are not very good at hiding who they are. First, the War Devil foolishly shows itself to Yoshida, and now Asa is shouting at the War Devil, which is invisible to everyone else and even calling it by name in public. You girls are very sneaky.
Asa and the War Devil Agree on Names as Danger Lurks
Asa is tired of the War Devil calling her “girl,” so she tells him to call her Asa instead. She does this to get him to stop talking about killing Yuko. As a response, the War Devil says that Asa never calls it by name either, and Asa says that War Devil is an odd name. Even though the War Devil knows that Asa is trying to change the subject, it gives up because it knows everything she is thinking. The War Devil then tells Asa to call it Yoru. This is interesting because Yoru means night, while Asa’s name means morning.
Then, they start calling each other by their names, which seems to show that they have reached an agreement. Asa finally seems happy, too, because while she is walking with Yoku, she tells herself that she doesn’t care about killing Chainsaw Man anymore because she is having fun with her friend, which is something she hasn’t felt in a long time. So, now that Asa is happy, something bad must happen. The scene cuts to a street preacher yelling at people walking by about how dangerous Devils are. He says that out of twenty random people, Devils will kill seven.
If this number is correct, it shows what a horrible world the people of Chainsaw Man live in. The next page, which shows Asa and Yuko running into the Bat Devil, who is currently killing a lot of people, makes it even scarier. The Bat Devil was one of the first big Devils that Denji fought and killed in Part One. So, it looks like the Bat Devil died in hell and was reborn on Earth to cause more trouble. Fujimoto seems to have drawn the Bat Devil eating a man to look like the painting Saturn Eating His Son by Francisco Goya, which was made in the 1800s.
Yoru’s bad news and the uncertain fate of Asa
As Asa watches in terror, Yoru shows up again and tells her in a funny way that she has bad news and more bad news.
The first bad news is that they are not strong enough to defeat the Bat Devil the way they are.
The second and most important bad news is that Yoru just found out that she can’t take over Asa’s body when her vessel is scared. This makes them pretty much powerless in this situation.
Fujimoto’s coloring of the panel that shows this is also great. It’s much brighter than the other, darker panels, which shows how important this reveal is and how scared it makes Asa. Yoru tells Asa to slowly move away from the Bat Devil, but she and Yuko run away instead, which makes Yoru call her an idiot and ends the chapter. So, how will Asa, Yoru, and Yuko get out of this?
So, I can think of three possibilities. The first is that Asa gets over her fear so that Yoru can take over her body, kill Yuko, and use her body as a weapon to kill the Bat Devil.

But I think this theory is the least likely because we just met Yuko and I think that if Fujimoto was going to kill her off, he would want to give her more page time so that her death would hurt us more. The second thing that could happen is that Yoshida saves them. As I said before, he might be following them because he doesn’t trust Asa, so now might be a good time to tell Asa, Yoru, and Yuko that he is a Devil Hunter.
The last possibility is that Denji kills the Bat Devil as Chainsaw Man. This could be used to show that Denji is back, but it could also be used to make people laugh by having the Bat Devil yell “Not again!” before Denji kills it and sends it back to hell. This could mean that we see Chainsaw Man a few more times before Asa finally meets him as Denji at school, even though Asa might not know that he is Chainsaw Man.
But based on how Fujimoto writes, I wouldn’t be surprised if Asa and Yuko are saved in a way that none of us have thought of.
Fujimoto is taking his first break for Part Two, so it will be interesting to see what he does in Chapter 102, which will be out in two weeks. “Afterschool Devil Hunters” is another great Chainsaw Man chapter that makes me eager to see what happens next.
