Chainsaw Man Episode 9 Review and Insights
Episode 9 of Chainsaw Man is full of action, and there are some plot and character twists that were worth the wait.
Chainsaw Man has been one of the most talked-about anime in recent years. Episode 9 of the first season is now available on Crunchyroll.
Crunchyroll says this about the story: “Denji is a teenager who lives with Pochita, a Chainsaw Devil. Due to the debts his father left behind, he has been living in squalor while collecting devil corpses with Pochita to pay off his debts. Denji is betrayed and killed one day. As his mind starts to fade, he makes a deal with Pochita and wakes up as “Chainsaw Man,” a man with the heart of the devil.
With this episode, the show is really starting to get interesting, and we can’t wait to get into it. First of all, a spoiler alert for Chainsaw Man is coming up…
Chainsaw Man Has a Nine-episode Rule
The three-episode rule is the norm for anime. That being, you need to watch the first three episodes of a show before you decide whether or not you like it.
But in some anime, you might have to wait a little longer for the plot to really get your attention. For example, I didn’t care much about Attack on Titan until I found out that Eren was also a Titan. And now you can say the same thing about Chainsaw Man. Even though there have been some cool parts and fun characters so far, I was beginning to think that maybe this show wasn’t for me.
But I can say for sure that even though this episode didn’t have as big a reveal as AoT, it finally got me interested in the story of the show.
After the last episode ended with almost all of the known characters on the verge of dying and several other agents shot dead, it was clear that this episode would raise the stakes and change things.
And it did just that, as the Gun Devil seems to be trying to catch Denji for some unknown reason. There have also been hints that there are more chainsaw people out there, which makes for some interesting lore. When you add this to the fact that some characters are still dying (but not Makima, who we’ll talk about in a minute), you have the start of a real plot.
The only thing that hasn’t come first yet is the presence of a real enemy. We know that the Gun Devil will be a big bad guy, and we’ve already met enemies with devil powers. But we haven’t seen a big bad take up a lot of screen time as a major character yet, which is something we hope the show will fix soon.
The Action is Accelerating
In this episode, there is more chainsaw action, and the choreography is getting faster because Denji is fighting against someone with similar skills. The action is still a little stiff because of the CGI, and there hasn’t been a fight that really wowed me, but I think we’re still getting used to everyone’s special skills.
For instance, the scene with Makima is a very interesting one. Even though she’s not a bad guy, her deal with a demon and the way she kills her enemies with such ease is very scary. Not only that, but the way the camera stays on the reactions of the characters suggests that there is much more to her fame and skills than we know.

And thank God, we can finally figure out why Kobeni is in this show. Even though characters who are too scared to do anything are still a frustrating trope, she was able to show off her skills this time, and she was really something to see, making a true “bait and switch” scene.
The show also seemed to be careful about how it showed her anxiety, making it seem like something understandable instead of unbearable. It’s too bad that she might leave the division now that she’s finally someone worth watching.
But since the remaining members of the specialized divisions were put together at the end of this episode, it looks like the next episode will introduce a lot of new characters and maybe even new plot points. Let’s see if they can keep up this mystery.
