Bulgasal: Immortal Souls Episode 8
Detective Kwon’s Revealing Past and Hwal’s Reaction
Hwal tells her that she should stop trying to make him feel sorry for her. “I feel bad about everything I’ve done.” Sang-Un soon says. She knows it doesn’t make up for what happened in her past lives, but at least it’s something, and Hwal seems happy about that. Even if he doesn’t show it on the outside.
When Hwal gets back to his house, he looks around and notices that Hye-Suk is not acting like herself. With the fire burning on the stove, she suddenly stands up and tells Hwal that everyone will die and bleed from every orifice. There’s no doubt that this makes people look scared and worried. Even more so when Hye-Suk snaps out of it and goes back to being the bubbly person she usually is.
Detective Kwon comes by with a piece of meat. He also has a picture of himself that he shows to Sang-Un and Hwal in private. This is a picture of Eul-Tae from the past. It turns out that he changes his name every 30 years or so, and back then he was known as Ok Sang-Yeong.
As he talks about his connections to powerful men, Hwal gets angry and tells him to stop being so careless. “Bulgasal can’t be caught by a person!” He says so. Sang-un, on the other hand, tells him that they will try to kill Bulgasal.
Detective Kwon’s Unresolved Case and Hwal’s Father’s Story
When Detective Kwon goes somewhere, Hwal goes with him. As they drink, Hwal talks about how good his father was to him and how they drank together. In return, Kwon tells his story. In particular, he talks about the case of Bulgasal from 15 years ago.
The man he first thought killed the people ended up killing himself, which closed the case. But Kwon just couldn’t let go of it. So, a younger man named Lee Su-Gyeong the investigation and went to the dead person’s house in his place one day. She was found hanged, and a note to her husband made it clear that she had killed herself.
But Kwon is sure that Eul-Tae is behind this, which is part of the reason he is so determined to find him. Su-Gyeong killed herself three days before her birthday, which makes things even worse. When Hwal sees a picture of the family, he can immediately tell that her husband is in it. He then asks who he is.
When Si-Ho gets home, she tells her sister about the strange things that happened while she was gone. How Hye-past Suk’s memories looked to her. She saw echoes of her life in Joseon and thinks she might have a special talent. Si-Ho wants to give that present to Sang-Un, but her sister talks her out of it.
That night, when Hwal returns, he discusses Si-Ho’s gift and the prophecy, involving Bulgasal which has led them all the way here. Hye-prophecy Suk’s that they will all die seems to be about Sang-Un, especially if she gets her memories back from her past lives.
Conflict and Revelation: Hwal’s Journey to Uncover the Truth
That night, Hwal finds Se-husband Gyeung and decides to take him home. He’s a drunken mess, and it’s clear that he’s still sad about his dead wife. Unfortunately, this is only made worse when Hwal learns his son is there, head down and succumbing to his father’s wishes.
When Hwal sees this child’s dad yelling at and hurting his son, it brings back a lot of memories from when he was pushed away. Hwal’s passionate speech says the same thing, and he finally looks at the man with disgust and tells him he’s a mess.
As Hwal walks away, he smashes a soju bottle with one hand while his anger is boiling over. He ends up getting blood on his knuckles, though.
When he gets home, he takes out his anger on Sang-Un because he is still mad. He says Sang-old Un’s name and makes her feel scared. The problem is that he does all of this while Si-Ho watches and asks what’s going on. Here is where Sang-Un admits that in a past life, she was Bulgasal. But Si-Ho starts to doubt her, which makes Hwal leave in the middle of the night to find out the truth.
Detective Kwon decides to follow Eul-Tae because he wants to know the truth. He goes against what Hwal wants and starts looking for Bulgasal, who finds him in the end.
He knows that Kwon has been following him since he moved into his house, so he tells him he is a stalker. He also says that they should talk. During their conversation, Eul-Tae says that he didn’t kill his partner all those years ago. But Kwon sees right through the lie. He talks about the terrible things that happened to his family, like how Bulgasal killed his daughter and her family.
Hwal’s Encounter with Dueoksini
When Eul-eyes Tae’s turn red, he sees flashes of his past. He immediately regrets coming here alone, knowing that this is the enemy he’s been looking for. Eul-Tae doesn’t kill him, but instead tells Kwon to give Hwal a message. He doesn’t die, but Eul-friend Tae hits him with her car from behind.
Sang-search Un leads her to the hospital, where she sits with her grandmother, Go-Bun. She wants to know who Hwa-Yeon really is and what she has done in the past. Go-Bun pretends to be her and tells everyone that Hwa-Yeon was the one who saved everyone. She told everyone that Bulgasal was coming and told them to run. Dark Hole was the one who started everything, and he did it with the help of a man with a scar on his hand.
Sang-Un gets a call from the person who took Kwon and wants to meet. She is also a monster named Dueoksini who Hwal knew in the past. When Hwal goes into the woods, the first thing he sees is Kwon tied to a tree.
Hwal walks right into this trap, and a syringe of poison—enough to kill dozens of people—is injected into him. Of course, it won’t kill him, but it will keep him from moving and make him feel too much pain to bear.
The Truth Unveiled: Eul-Tae’s Confession and Sang-Un’s Revelation
Hwal keeps trying to save Kwon, and Kwon ends up saving Hwal. Just when things look bad, Eul-Tae shows up out of nowhere, bites Dueoksini on the neck, and tells her that Hwal is his. As Kwon watches, he is shocked to see Hwal get better after being hurt. Eul-Tae says that Hwal is also Bulgasal, which breaks the detective’s heart and leaves him or her speechless. He runs into the woods to get away from the danger and thinks about what has happened.
In private, Eul-Tae tells Hwal that she shouldn’t get too close to Sang-Un. He tells him that she is not what she seems to be and that he shouldn’t be fooled by her. Only Sang-Un shows up and calls Eul-Tae out on her lies. She knows that he started the fire and killed everyone in the village. As the three of them stare each other down, the episode ends.
Bulgasal: Immortal Souls Episode 8 Review
As another exciting episode ends, Bulgasal keeps getting stronger and stronger. This K-drama is really good, and the parallel stories from the past and the present are so well put together. The story of the drama has a lot of similarities to Goblin, but it’s different enough that it doesn’t feel like a copy of that very popular show.
Over the course of the season, the lore and mythology have been built up really well, and even now, 8 episodes in, this has been cleverly woven into the stories of our three main characters.
The drama with Kwon at the end is just as dramatic, and adding a new monster for our heroes to fight each week is a nice way to keep the theme going.
So far, Bulgasal has been a great show to watch, and the rest of it should be just as dramatic and full of action. Could this be the Korean drama of the year? From what we can see, it looks like that’s the case.
