A Man Called Otto Review
Otto Anderson is the type of grumpy person that almost all of us have met or are at risk of becoming. Otto follows the rules of the letter, likes to do things the way they were done before, and avoids talking to people.
This old man who misses his wife so much is actually like a chocolate lava cake with a thick crust. Since Tom Hanks, Hollywood’s resident Mr. Nice Guy plays Otto, he can never be more than a crank that needs to be oiled.
The book A Man Called Otto by Marc Forster is based on both the book A Man Called Ove by Fredrik Backman and the Swedish movie of the same name. David Magee’s version adds more warmth to a story about a man who is unhappy during the winter.
Otto, who is from Pittsburgh, has his bad mood put to the test when Marisol (Mariana Trevino), who is very pregnant, moves into his neighborhood with her nerdy husband Tommy (Manuel Garcia-Ruflo), and two cute daughters. It’s hard to stay mad at Marisol’s cheeriness, just like it’s hard to stay mad at Mariana Trevino’s performance.
The 126-minute movie treats heavy topics like ageism, grief over a family member’s death, and the forced gentrification of old neighborhoods as if they were fairy tales. Even though the comedy doesn’t have many surprises—barbs Otto’s don’t stick around—it moves along on the strength of the good-natured performances and the idea that life is ultimately beautiful.
Tom Hanks tries hard to look mean, but his natural friendliness always comes through. Otto finds out, to his disgust, that he can’t get away from being squishy. In the same way, the movie spreads out the butter and some very mild bitters.
